Greenwood Metropolitan District

2007 WEASC OPERATIONS CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS

Text Box: The upstate does it again! Greenwood Metropolitan Districts’ Operations Challenge team “rocked the pavilion” so to speak and took the title of 2007 WEASC Operations challenge Champion. GMD exerted its’ Operations challenge prowess in winning four of the five events to take the coveted Challenge Cup. The title was the second for Greenwood Metro and they served notice to all comers this year that they are a team to be respected and watched in the coming years. Take notice Western Carolina, North Charleston, Camden, Capital District and all others, Greenwood Metro is back on top and won’t easily give up that cup in 2008.

Rumor had it that Greenwood was determined this year and prepared with great determination and at a feverish pace with one goal in mind, “total victory” and a trip to San Diego, CA this fall. Oh how close they were to a complete sweep of the five events. Greenwood took first place in Pump Maintenance, Collections, Safety and Laboratory events for a total of 494 points of a possible 500. The City of Camden took second place overall with 476 points with second place in the Process Control, Laboratory and Collections events. Camden made a strong showing again for the second year in a row and pulled off two overall events second place finishes in 06 and now in 07. Camden made a strong statement and are “must watch team” for 2008 and well into the future.

The City of Cayce and Ea Services, Capital District supported teams, also made their presence known. The City of Cayce finished first in the Process Control Event and second overall in the Safety Event for a total of  473 points of 500 which was a mere 3 points from the second place finisher City of Camden. EA Services had a second place overall finish in Pump Maintenance event and totaled 467 points for the competition.  The competition was close overall and just a   few seconds could have swung the overall second place results in a different direction.

The 2007 event also had two invitational teams participate that were from Virginia Beach and
Franklin, Virginia. The WEASC continues to maintain and expand its efforts to involve other nationally known teams in our challenge in order that our teams can learn from teams that regularly compete in the Operations Challenge at WEFTEC year in and year out. As an added bonus, these teams usually reciprocate the offer for our winning team to participate in their events to help them better prepare for the Annual WEF event in the fall. This years invitational plaque went to Franklin, Va. as they had the best overall times in all five of the events.

Each of the participating organizations that fielded teams are to be congratulated for their efforts, their support for their respective teams and support for the operations challenge program. The PWO Committee also expresses its’ appreciation for the support of its members that serve as event coordinators,  judges and volunteers. A lot of hard work and time goes into locating and securing the necessary equipment and supplies to make the Operations Challenge happen, the transport of equipment, the set up and breakdown of the challenge venue and the running of  run their respective events. The PWO Committee wishes to express our thanks and great appreciation for all those that provided sponsorship and invites them to remain involved in their support for our “Annual Wastewater Olympics” in Myrtle Beach into the future.
