Inflow and infiltration are terms used to describe
storm-water and groundwater that enters into the sewer
system. Inflow is storm-water that enters directly into a
sanitary sewer system. Sanitary sewer systems are designed
to carry only wastewater. Infiltration is excess water that
gets into the sewer system through open joints, cracks, and
breaks in the pipes. The I & I department conducts routine
testing and inspections to determine where inflow and
infiltration problems exist. Various methods used to
identify problem areas include smoke and dye testing, flow
monitoring, visual manhole inspections and televising lines.
Construction inspectors in this department ensure that
Greenwood Metropolitan District’s design manual and sanitary
sewer ordinances are being followed by developers,
contractors and plumbers. Greenwood Metropolitan District’s
inspectors inspect all new construction, home or business
service line connections and when a residential or business
service line is replaced.
