The biosolids program
is a process at the Wilson Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant
which removes solids, known as sludge, from the wastewater.
The sludge is sent through a belt press to squeeze out as
much of the water as possible. The processed solids are
loaded into a dump truck and hauled to a pasture land site
to be spread. The sludge from the West Alexander Wastewater
Treatment Plant is hauled to Wilson Creek Wastewater
Treatment Plant to be combined with Wilson Creek sludge
before being spread. Each land site is permitted by the
South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental
Control (SCDHEC) before any sludge is spread on the
land. The Biosolids Department personnel
are certified and
highly trained and must ensure that the sludge meets
stringent requirements set by the United States
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the SCDHEC before
it leaves the plant. The sludge is analyzed for metals,
nutrients, pathogens and other elements on a continuing
basis. The biosolids are sent through a heat pasteurization
process where all of the pathogens are killed. The Biosolids
Department personnel operate the belt press and spread the
sludge on permitted sites.
